Western Power Distribution Becomes National Grid Following Acquisition
Following its acquisition by National Grid last year, Western Power Distribution has been renamed National Grid from September 2022.
The £7.8bn acquisition is one of three strategic transactions National Grid is making to reposition its portfolio. They’ve also initiated the sale of Narragansett Electrical Company (NECO) based in Rhode Island, US, and plan to sell a majority stake of their UK gas transmission and metering business.
Almost 70% of National Grid Group’s assets will now be focused on electricity, up from 60% last year. It’s part of their vision to be at the heart of a clean, fair and affordable energy future.
The Committee on Climate Change anticipates that there will be a 70% increase in UK electricity demand by 2050 and National Grid plans to play a pivotal role in enabling growing levels of electrification.
Its goal is to share best practice across engineering and customer solutions to help drive an effective roll-out of infrastructure needed for electric vehicles and efficiently deliver increasing levels of renewables connections to help deliver on the UK’s wider net zero ambitions.
National Grid Electricity Distribution is the largest electricity distribution network operator in the UK and serves in excess of 8 million customers in the Midlands, South West England and South Wales.
As specialists in the utilities and energy sector, Glanville Projects has worked alongside Western Power Distribution on a number of projects. Director, Mark Horrocks said, “The UK energy market is transitioning towards a greener future and it’s clear that the National Grid wants to be at the forefront of this change. We’re focused on providing project management support to this growing sector and excited about the opportunities sustainable development in energy supply will bring to industries and consumers across the UK.”
